The learning continues…
Again, I attended a marathon of workshops. I started the day with Linda Cowgill’s “Common Plot Problems”. Linda heads the screenwriting department of the LA Film School. I managed to have a workshop break mid morning and heard the legendary Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (writers of Star Trek) enlighten us on the state of the industry and their writing experience. I attended a business workshop by Victoria Wisdom who was an agent for many years. She talked about the harsh realities of the industries and not to pitch dramas or period/ epic/ costume projects early in our careers. However, Hollywood has the tenacity to make smaller prestige films “for a price” (usually a low one). Despite Victoria making “zooming” indie 500 noises with her microphone and posing for the camera, she knows her stuff. The world needs more eccentrics like her.
The afternoon kicked off with Steve Kaplan entertaining us on what is a comedy screenplay. It’s about the cold hard truth and doing whatever we have to to get to it! I was the designated scribe on the whiteboard; because of my proximity not my handwriting.
Other luminaries who gave Q&As today include James Manos Jr (Dexter) and Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) and David Shore (NYPD Blue).
